The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has announced
the release of the Transportation
System Performance (TSP) report. Part A of the comprehensive
Prairie Parkway Study examines the existing and future transportation
characteristics, performance, and improvements in an area, which
is experiencing growing regional development demand and increased
traffic congestion.
The report identifies a number of existing and projected future
transportation system deficiencies in the study area, which includes
all of Kendall County, and portions of DeKalb, Grundy, Kane, LaSalle,
and Will counties.
The announcement of these deficiencies concludes a one-year effort,
which included:
- Data collection
- Future year (2030) population and employment forecasting
- Travel demand modeling
- Analysis of transportation performance
The main objective of the TSP report is to evaluate the existing
and future population, employment, and transportation conditions
in the general study area, including the incorporation of public
perceptions of development and transportation needs. Information
and perceptions offered at over 70 briefings with elected officials
and civic groups supplemented the technical analysis for the region.
The findings will be shared with the public through another series
of public meetings and briefings. The next steps for advancing further
studies following these briefings will include:
- Developing a statement defining the purpose and need for improvements.
- Defining a wide range of potential alternatives, such as widening
existing routes, new arterials, new expressways or freeways, and
transit improvements.
- Screening and reducing down to an alternative that meets the
improvement objectives.
- Performing additional environmental and engineering studies
to identify significant impacts and consequences.
